Some of my favorite tips:
- Use your company values to guide the hiring process 
- These early hires steer the culture and values of your company 
- Be open to augmenting your company’s values based on the collection of people you’re assembling 
- Wait until you’re in real pain. Make sure there will be sustained work and need for a hire before adding to your team in such a long-term way, and not just a short-term annoyance you’d like help with. 
- Determine who will be doing the interviews in advance 
- Include cross-functional roles in the process 
- Work together to determine exactly what you’re looking for in this hire, and build out interview questions (and ideally a rubric) to score candidates on answers. 
- Time kills all deals. Lots of factors in play, but the best hiring happens within a month form start to finish. Plan your hires when you will have a full month to focus on this project.
